Safety at Margaret Court Arena

Melbourne Park

The Margaret Court Arena, at Melbourne Park, is Australia’s preeminent sporting location. Melbourne Park hosts around 600 events and attracts more than two million people each year. The park is undergoing a multi-million dollar transformation to cater for increasing Australian Open audiences and to establish Melbourne and Olympic Parks as a premier sports and events precinct.

Overhead Protection & Safety Measures Needed

Lendlease Project Management and Construction are implementing a $366 million redevelopment of the Margaret Court Tennis Arena, scheduled to be completed over three years. This includes a retractable roof and increased stadium seating. In preparation for a recent major tennis tournament the site needed specific safety measures for safe public access to and around the stadium. Overhead protection was particularly important to prevent potential injury from falling objects.

Safety Net Systems in Place

OPEC Systems was engaged to overcome these safety issues. Our safety net systems allowed for a safe and reliable access to work at heights. They were cost effective and practical. The project necessitated the use of low impact, temporary systems to meet demanding deadlines. These safety systems needed to be clean, safe and aesthetically pleasing. OPEC’s lightweight debris netting system satisfied all these criteria.

OPEC supplied the client with new ply polyurethane fibre rope netting for both low-lying and high areas. The netting was securely attached to the building’s superstructure using a range of sophisticated equipment. All systems were quickly and easily detached upon completion of the work.

Excellent Working at Heights Procedures

OPEC has the equipment and expertise to ensure a safe working at heights environment. OPEC supplied platform ladders, mobile towers and elevated working platforms to construction staff at the Margaret Court Arena.

All OPEC work was undertaken by expert operators. Our operators have all the competencies and qualifications to undertake and oversee high risk work. These include advanced skills in rigging, scaffolding, dogging, forklifting and qualifications in Senior First Aid. OPEC staff’s expertise and professionalism enabled work, at Margaret Court Arena, to be finished on time, within budget and without incident.
